llms.txt is an open proposal for a concise Markdown guide at a website root or within a path. It helps AI agents that choose to read it find relevant pages for a task. Think of it as a curated content map, not a set of instructions that AI systems must obey. The proposal is now at v2; whether a particular agent reads or uses the file depends on that service.

How is it different from robots.txt and sitemap.xml?

  • llms.txt curates background information and important links so an agent can find more detailed, preferably machine-readable pages when needed.
  • robots.txt states crawling rules. llms.txt does not replace it and does not block access to a page.
  • sitemap.xml lists pages for discovery and indexing. llms.txt is usually shorter and explains which pages matter for a topic.
Removing a URL from llms.txt therefore does not remove it from search results or prevent an AI crawler from reaching it.

What should the file contain?

Proposal v2 permits /llms.txt at the site root or a scoped file such as /docs/llms.txt. Begin with one H1 naming the site or project. A short summary, additional context, and links grouped under H2 headings help readers decide what to open next. For example:

Example Store

Official product information, policies, and support resources.

Products

Help

Link to real, accessible pages and explain each link’s purpose. Verify changing facts such as price, stock and policy terms against their source pages; review the file periodically. Do not place private data in a public llms.txt file. For complex sites, consider clean Markdown versions of important pages as well.

How to test its usefulness

  1. Open the target URL and confirm it returns the intended Markdown, not a login or error page.
  2. Follow several links and confirm they still work and contain accurate information.
  3. Test a real agent that uses llms.txt with specific questions: can it find the right page and cite the underlying content?
  4. To assess business outcomes, examine server logs, site analytics and each clearly defined GEOly metric separately. A crawler request, citation in an AI answer, referral session and conversion are different signals.
llms.txt cannot guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini or any other service reads the file, prioritizes your brand, cites it, raises a ranking, sends traffic or improves conversion. It also cannot force a model to use current prices. It complements accessible pages, accurate product information, structured data and normal access controls; it does not replace them.
